Jump to Recipe

A super easy minced beef pie recipe that's just delicious for family dinner. I promise this delicious puff pastry pie will fast become a family favourite!

Old fashioned mince beef pie is super simple to make! Seriously this recipe couldn't be easier!

It's great for bigger families as it's enough for a nice big family sized mince pie recipe, enough to feed six people.

You can make the mince beef pie filling in a saucepan, but I usually cook the minced beef and onion pie filling in the slow cooker throughout the day.

This way just means I've got a head start on dinner for when I get home.

Then all I need to do at dinner time is just top the minced pie filling with a puff pastry lid.

And yes, I cheat and use shop bought pastry and finish the pie off in the oven.

This is one of favourite beef mince dishes to cook – total comfort food!

What's In Minced Beef Pie?

Our minced beef pie is packed with delicious savoury mince beef and onion.

All simmered together with carrots and celery for added sweetness.

And lightly seasoned with herbs and Worcestershire sauce.

We also use a rich beef stock pot for added flavour.

Minced Beef Pie Ingredients

To make our mince pie recipe you'll just need a handful of regular ingredients, there's nothing fancy required – its a super easy minced meat recipe!

ingredients for minced beef pie - minced beef, red onion, 2 carrots, tsp thyme, salt and black pepper, olive oil, Worcestershire sauce, beef stock pot and a box of ready rolled puff pastry sheet.
  • 1 tbs olive oil – you can use rapeseed oil if you prefer.
  • 1 onion – finely diced, you can swap this for a couple of leeks if you prefer
  • 2 carrots – peeled and sliced – just choose medium carrots.
  • 2 celery sticks – scrubbed and sliced (these are optional, you can make the pie without if you wish)
  • 500g minced beef – choose a pack of low fat minced steak for this recipe.
  • 300ml hot beef stock
  • splash of Worcestershire sauce – if you haven't got Worcestershire sauce – add a squirt of BBQ sauce or stir through a tsp of mild mustard.
  • 1 tsp dried thyme – or you can use dried mixed herbs if you prefer.
  • pinch sea salt
  • pinch ground black pepper
  • 1 sheet of ready rolled puff pastry – it's good to keep a pack of puff pastry in the fridge as it's great for helping turn leftovers into a pie or pasty. Or for making quick puff pastry pizzas for lunch.

  • Slow cooker (or saucepan if using the hob method)
  • Chopping board

  • Wooden spoon

How To Make Minced Beef Pie

This is one of our favourite dishes with mince – super easy to make

Cooks Note! I use a Crockpot sauté slow cooker so the slow cooker bowl is removable and hob safe. I start the minced beef pie filling off on the hob and then transfer to the Crockpot base for slow cooking. If you don't have a hob safe slow cooker – use a saucepan for the hob cooking parts.

Step One – Preheat the slow cooker

  • Heat the slow cooker to low to cook in 8 hours and high to cook in 4 hours.

Step Two – Prepare the vegetables

  • Peel and finely chop the onions

Step Four – Make the beef mince and onion pie

  • Pour the minced steak pie filling into a roasting tin or pie dish.

  • Remember this is a rustic pie – you don't need to be overly neat or perfect with the finish (rustic cooking is my favourite style!)
  • Press the edges with a fork all the way around to crimp them a little.
  • Use any pastry scraps to decorate the top of the pie.
  • Add a couple of slits in the pastry for air to escape.

Yes! You can make the mince pie recipe filling the day before you want to use it, then cool completely and store in the fridge.
